Position Summary:


The Scientist, Research is a member of Analytical and Data Science team, which are part of Global Sensory, User Experience (UX) and Analytical team. The position will play a key role in both analytical method advancement and R&D’s data capability development.


The position is responsible for developing and validating new analytical methods to improve or expand R&D and manufacturing testing capabilities. This includes technology screening, feasibility testing, data training and validation, protocol development and method transferring to R&D or manufacturing customers.


For highly complex, advanced, or specific technologies that are not available in house, the position liaises with external laboratories to conduct tests or analysis that meet internal customers’ requirements.


In support of R&D and commercial projects, the position designs and leads statistical sampling, conducts analytical testing and data analyses, issues reports and provides actionable recommendations to stakeholders. The position applies scientific problem solving, proof-of-concept testing and rapid prototyping to accelerate research projects and the development of new technologies.


The Scientist, Research will contribute to build a Systems Thinking and Design of Experiment (DoE) culture within global and regional R&D teams. The position guides and educates R&D teams by applying DoE and practical statistics concepts in product development cycle, aiming to improve work efficiency and effectiveness.


The position plays a vital role in developing a structured database to capture sensory, UX and analytical data and conducting data analysis to drive actionable insights. It includes identifying data opportunities, defining and scoping a delivery approach against targeted uses, and building a database and data analytics tools through coordinated effort between McCain’s Data Analytics and R&D groups.


The required qualifications and experiences:
  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, Statistics or related field.
  • Minimum 4 years (2 year with Master’s degree) in a laboratory or research setting across a range of analytical techniques
  • Experience in analytical method development and validation, including creation of user information package
  • Working knowledge of applied statistical analysis, including DoE and multivariate analysis
  • Proficiency in statistics modelling and data analytics with experience using Python, R, SQL, or VBA would be considered a valuable asset.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences ranging from highly scientific/technical to non-technical personnel and customers
  • Depth of knowledge in analytical physics or chemistry
  • Expertise in analytical method development and validation in harmony with recognized industry guidelines
  • Ability to apply rigorous scientific approaches for troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Ability to apply statistics (ANOVA, DoE, sampling plan, modelling etc.) to address R&D or manufacturing challenges
  • Ability to identify a data improvement opportunity, challenge the status quo and suggest an alternative approach that can be realized through combined team effort
  • Knowledge of driving data projects to completion end-to-end
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong ability to manage work assigned
  • Experience with cross-functional project teams
  • Self-starter, able to adapt easily in a rapid changing business environment
